The Thrift Store is open full time and on Dixie Drive and has created many more volunteer positions!
We have opportunities in the store Monday – Saturday and in the Benevolence Area Monday through Thursday.
Proceeds from the store help support the short-term Financial Crisis Intervention Program that CUOC operates for people in need. Come join our family!
PROJECT INDEPENDENCE
Volunteer Mentor Duties and Skills
Basic Function: A Project Independence volunteer mentor will serve as a liaison between a program participant, CUOC staff and participating community agencies. A mentor will be primarily responsible for, but not limited to, monitoring a client’s progression through the program based on his/her individualized goal plan. This goal plan will be created through a collaboration of the client and staff and its successful completion will rest heavily on the strength of the personal relationship to be established between mentor and client.
Volunteer mentoring duties:
- Be willing and able to commit a substantial amount of time to the program.
- Participate in a series of orientation, training, and follow-up sessions designed to familiarize the mentor with Project Independence.
- Be familiar with other CUOC programs and community agencies that may participate in the client’s goal plan.
Be active in communicating barriers that may arise to CUOC staff.
An effective volunteer mentor will possess the following skills:
- The ability to listen empathetically, attentively, and patiently.
- The ability to encourage the client continually to remain committed to the tasks at hand and their eventual independence.
